چکیده

Whereas (3a), involving a definite quantity, triggers plural agreement, (3b), which involves a nondefinite quantity (equivalent to thousands of in English), only optionally triggers agreement. Cardinal Qs, in the varieties we focus on here, always trigger plural agreement. Vague Qs constructed out of them, on the other hand, may not. The present paper offers a preliminary analysis of the phenomenon. We claim that nonagreeing Qs (n-a Qs) are not counting expressions, but measure phrases. Measures constitute the other quantificational domain in Basque that presents an agreement alternation in number:

Number Agreement in Basque: Counting vs. Measuring

This paper argues that Basque non-agreeing quantifiers are conceptually measures and that measures head their own functional projection in the expanded structure of the Noun Phrase. This functional projection is placed in-between the Classifier Phrase (where division occurs) and the Number Phrase (where counting occurs), following Borer (2005). The distinction we make between the measuring fiel...

Thematic Volume on Bare Nominal 11.1. Edições Colibri. [Pre-‐final version] When quantifiers do not agree: three systems

Basque weak quantifiers optionally agree with the inflected verb in number. This papers’ main aim is to study the dialectal variation shown by this phenomenon. The study will show that it is necessary to differentiate at least three systems: the western-central system, one that we will call the transition system, and the eastern system (souletin). The western-central system allows the presence ...

The way the definite determiner affects quantifiers in Basque ( and beyond )

Based on Basque data (and in line with Etxeberria & Giannakidou 2010, to appear), this paper argues that the domain for quantifiers in certain languages is restricted overtly by a definite determiner (D). This strategy of domain restriction via D—DDR—happens by applying DDR to the nominal argument, but DDR can also apply to the Q-det itself, in which case it forms a constituent with it. In both...

Basque clitics in morphosyntax*

This paper addresses the question of φ -feature marking in Basque. Basque finite verbs display an uncommonly large number of morphemes which covary with the φ -features of the absolutive, ergative, and dative arguments as well as (in some dialects) the gender of the addressee. Recent work (Preminger 2009; Arregi & Nevins 2012) has addressed the question of how these morphemes are derived. In ta...

Children’s ambiguous understanding of weak and strong quantifiers

Despite suggestions in the literature that the semantics of many might be the key for understanding children’s non-adult-like interpretations of quantified sentences (cf. Drozd 2001, Geurts 2003), experimental data on the acquisition of weak quantifiers like many is rare. This paper investigates children’s comprehension of weak (many) versus strong (many of, all) quantifiers in English. In part...
